UPDATE 2: Google says supports responsible political advertising – report
(Adds Google comment in paragraph 3)
MOSCOW, Sep 9 (PRIME) -- MOSCOW, Sep 9 (PRIME) -- Google supports responsible political advertisements in line with local laws, it said on Monday in response to accusations by Russia of interfering into internal affairs, Reuters reported on Monday.
Google refused to clarify in a statement whether political advertisements had been distributed or not.
“We support responsible political advertising and expect that it has to comply with local legislative demands including the laws on elections and voting rights and mandatory ‘election silence’ for any geographical areas where such advertising is oriented,” Google said in a statement.
Russia’s Central Election Commission Deputy Director Nikolai Bulayev said earlier that many materials published on the resources of Facebook and Google can be considered as meddling with sovereign affairs of the country.
The communications service said it had revealed political advertisements in Google and Facebook on the single voting day of September 8.
Reuters also quoted Facebook as saying that responsibility for respect of the local election law lies with the advertisers.
